NHO wants higher scholarships for certain university programs

The Norwegian Confederation of Enterprise (NHO) wants to reward the students that choose university programs that are in high demand by the business sector, and give lower scholarships to others. Opulentus NorwayNHO wants to reward students who choose to study science and math, programs that are in high demand by the Norwegian industry and business sectors, by increasing the funding they get from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. For a long time, both the government, members of parliaments, researchers and people in the business sector have pointed out that there is little co-relation in Norway between recruitment to university programs and the education and skills that are in demand. "When we need engineers, it's a concern that the recruitment to science courses and programs is so low," says Kristin Skogen Lund, CEO of NHO to Aftenposten. By giving more scholarships to certain university programs, we can make it more attractive for students to choose these courses," she points out. She highlighted that Norway needs more engineers with the language and cultural skills required to communicate with several trade partners. Skogen also listed the health and care sector as an area will need more and more skilled workers. "However, there will also be a certain level of insecurity based on the development of the industry and business sector, so we won't know exactly what type of education we will need all the time," Skogen explains to Aftenposten. Skogen dismisses that the NHO suggests a way to control students' choice in education. "We do not want to be the judges of what people choose to study and work with," she says. "Meanwhile, it is important to establish the fact that everybody can't be generalists. We have to dimension our education system to a place where we feel confident that we are getting the skills and education we need," Skogen explains. All types of education are important, and everybody will still get loans and scholarships, the CEO concludes.
