Utoya, Norway gets NOK 60 million for facelift

Utoya has got approval and financial funding of NOK 60 million from AUF (Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking) to develop the area and make it more tourist and public friendly after the massacre by Anders Behring Breivik. Plan by AUF wants Utoya to turn into “Norway’s leading course- and favorite spot for youth.  Architects have unveiled designs for a renovated Utoya which will include a new central square featuring a clock tower, kitchen and bazaar area, new piers, new overnight accommodation, an upgrade of current facilities, conference center with a new dining hall, new stage for concerts cultural events, athletic fields and, last but not least a monument to victims of last year’s terrorist attacks. NorwayvisasEskil Pedersen of AUF was of the opinion that his group wants to make a comeback to Utoya and arrange for youth summer camps again on the beautiful island. He said “We think that’s the best way to honour the victims. We know that some of the families and survivors don’t want us to use the island again, but we don’t want the island to simply become overgrown and abandoned.” Norway has developed its security in a more organized manner and is planning to deploy more armed forces to make the country a safe place to live in.
